Pope Michael's thoughts on Selfishness

This is an ongoing project, begun in 1999, when I received some documentation and a lecture on self-love.  However, I believe selfishness is a better term.  In September of 2006, I gave a sermon on charity and selfishness, which I believe added fuel to the fire of a heretic preparing her departure from the Catholic Church

Selfless: without regard to oneself or one’s own interests; unselfish.
Selfish: Having such regard for one’s own interests and advantage that the happiness and welfare of others become of less concern than is considered right or just; too much concerned with one’s own welfare.
By looking at these dictionary definitions one immediately see that selfishness leads quickly to sins against justice, that is giving to others what we owe to them.  One quickly sees why selfishness is the road to hell.

From Teaching the Christian Virtues, by William H. Russell, 1952 page 168: Sin is selfishness; sin is a rejection of a loving Father; sin is refusal to listen to Christ.  Page 95: Self-centeredness is indeed blinding.  The selfish are blind to their plight.  They are spiritually dead, but do not see this.  This is why we must EXAMINE OUR CONSCIENCE and see if we have the symtoms of this deadly disease, which flows from pride!

Saint Alphonsus reminds us: St. Augustine writes, that two cities may be built up in the heart of a Christian; one by the love of God, the other by selfishness.

Dom Gueranger numbers ingratitude as a symptom of the deadly disease of selfishness, which springs from pride.

Saint Gregory the Great describes the selfish as porcupines. We have expanded on that, since there is a syndrome or type of people, who are like the porcupine.   According to Saint Gregory the Great, this type of selfish person is difficult to convert.  However, we should never lose hope.  Above all, let us rememer that it isour first duty to saveour own soul.  Let us be honest with our own selves.  If we find ourself on one or more of these pages, then let us apply the remedies!  Selsihness is a curable disease, but with all things this will take work.  So let us do the work and avoid sin like the plague it is!

Charity can be summarized as love of God and love of our neighbor for the love of God. Selfishness can be summarized as the exaltation of self above all, making our own self our own god! Pope Leo XIII stated: According to what Christ Jesus revealed to St. Margaret Mary, Devotion to the Sacred Heart was preordained by God to cure the chief wound of modern society, Selfishness

Prayer to root out Self love: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole, heart, soul, mind, body and strength.  Lord, help me to love Thee with my whole heart, soul, mind, body and strength.  Root out of me all disordered self love, which leads me to hell.  Amen.
October 3: Saint Bernard says: For they who wish to be their own, that like gods they may know good and evil, become not merely their own, but the Devil's  It is our own will in truth, which makes us the slaves of the Devil, and not his power.  But our will will not be perfect until it is brought into entire subjection to its Creator.  Assuredly it is better for us not to exist at than to remain our own.  Amen.
